Pet Friendly Road Tripping Tips

Molly and Riley travel all over the country with me. From Texas to Florida to Michigan and Colorado. They have been to 30 states in America so far, and we will be adding 10 more by years end. I figured it was time to share some pet friendly road tripping tips with you, learn from our numerous trips what to do and what not to do.

Pet Friendly Travel Tips and Ideas

Create a Safe Environment

Car Seats are great for keeping your pet safe in the car. We hope you never get in a car accident, but if you do, you want to make sure your fur-baby is safely secured. There are quite a few choices to choose from, I love the bucket cars seats for my little girls.

Harnesses Are Great For Safety

Harnesses make it easier to secure your pets to their car seats. They are also more comfortable for your pet when you are walking them during potty breaks. You don’t want them choking themselves because they are excited about new locations.

Leashes Are Very Important, For Safety, And For Control

Always keep your pup on a leash when you are in a public area. There are many to choose from, my girls use a standard leash, but extending leashes are great too.

Keep Your Pets Calm On The Road

Miss Molly has seizures and I have found that CBD Oil is a great choice for her. It keeps her calm when on the road and in new places. She isn’t a skittish or shy girl, she just takes a little longer to adjust to new things and places we haven’t been to yet.

Another great choice are Tru Dog Calming Chews. My girls love the taste of them, and they work great tin keeping them calm.

Food and Treats For Your Pup

My girls sleep in their car seats while the car is moving. But once that car stops, they are ready for a treat. Be sure to have treats readily available to hand to them when you stop.

Interactive Toys

Lots of toys, that is the key. Be sure they are toys they like, but also have a few new toys for them to get excited about. I suggest having a couple interactive toys, they are great for when you get to the hotel.

Pet Grooming

Getting your pup groomed before you hit the road is a great idea. They are all nice and clean, their nails are trimmed, which is definitely more comfortable for them. And be sure to have their teeth brushed.

Pet Friendly Hotels

I love the Homewood Suites, Home 2 Suites and Residence Inn Hotel lines. There are so many hotels out there to stay at that are pet friendly. Space is important to me. I want the girls to have room to stretch out and be comfortable. Be sure to check out the SURVEY that was done by the Hilton brand hotels.

Some of my favorite pet friendly hotels are these:

  • Hilton Brand Hotels like Home 2
  • Marriott Hotels Like Residence Inn
  • Red Roof Inn

Local Dog Parks

Be sure to stop often when you are on the road. It’s great for you and for your pups. Check online to see if there are local dog parks to go to while you are on the road. It’s a safe environment to let the pups out to run around and stretch thier legs. It’s also a great way for you to relax and have a picnic lunch for you and the pups.

First Aid Kits When On The Road

Things happen, you never know when your fur-baby will get a boo boo. Riley got really sick on when we were on one of our road trips. Since then, I always carry a first aid kit with me when I am on the road. Here is a list of items I usually have on hand.

  • Gauze
  • Baby Benedryl
  • Syringe
  • CBD Oil
  • Tape

Always consult your veterinarian before you start road tripping with your pet, they are a great resource for travel tips. And if you are on the road, you can ask around or google for a local vet. Molly had her first seizure when we were on the road. We found a wonderful vet that set us at ease until we were able to consult our regular vet.

A great resource for first aid supplies is Pet Medic USA.

Potty Breaks For The Human

Stopping for your own potty break can get a little hard when you are on the road with your pups. I don’t like leaving the girls in the car for any reason, and when the temperatures are over 70 degrees, you never want to leave your pups in the car alone.  A few places that are pet friendly and have bathrooms are:

  • Michaels
  • Lowes
  • Home Depot
  • Hobby Lobby
  • Rest Areas on The Road
